We see lots of them. We still watch the occasional movie on television but the density of commercials in the last half-hour of any show is so maddening that we try to avoid those movies if we possibly can. There is still one on occasionally, especially on Turner Classic Movies, and we will watch them from time to time.

We used to go to the video store, but we did it so seldom that when we got there we always argued about which movie to get. Karen liked to watch ones with intense interpersonal drama, while I, like most men, preferred action movies. It was just hard to pick one or two movies without one of them seeming like a mistake.

So we decided to try Netflix. We bought the basic plan, $10 a month for unlimited movies, one at a time. If we watch what were doing we can get up to about eight movies a month that way. Since we started watching the movies in May we have seen 56.

Netflix has a system for letting you rate the movies that you order. It’s a standard five star system with one star meaning bad and five stars meaning great. Since we wouldn’t order movies if we didn’t think we would like them, we like just about everything that we’ve ordered. As such we give those movies three stars. Only just a few movies got anything but three stars.

We also still see movies in the theater. I didn’t keep track of these so I can’t list them for you, but over the year to come, I will be keeping track of those as well.

I hope to have a movie review entry in this blog about once a month. Maybe that will help you to see some shows that you otherwise wouldn’t.

Here is a list of the movies we got in 2006:

 Madagascar
Zathura
Walk the Line
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Hotel Rwanda
Breakfast on Pluto
Songcatcher
Beyond the Sea
Ladies in Lavender
Revelation
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
Capote
Alexander: Director’s Cut
Broken Flowers
Corpse Bride
A Mighty Wind
The Brothers Grimm
Flightplan
Jarhead
The Island
Poirot: The Mysterious Affair at Styles
Kingdom of Heaven
National Treasure
Red Eye
Chicken Little
Serenity
Poirot: Murder in Mesopotamia
Amelie
The Passion of the Christ
Born Into Brothels
The Tunnel
Donnie Darko: Director’s Cut
Poirot: Death in the Clouds
Girl with a Pearl Earring
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Zelig
Farewell My Concubine
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music
Blow Up
The Dinner Game
The Who: The Kids Are Alright
Candleshoe
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Quest for Fire
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Tom Jones
Gods and Generals
MirrorMask
Open Range
The Order
Underworld
Uncovered
Paycheck
Spartan
Enigma

Butch

Karen and I love movies.
