Karen’s stepdad, Vern Becker, died last Thursday evening. His son Kevin called us the next day to let us know. He had been sick the last few months and discovered he had cancer in his neck. They operated and removed as much of it as they could but they told him it would grow back. He could have had radiation treatment if he wanted but he chose not to and went into hospice care. Below is his obituary.
Those of you who would like to leave rememberences or comments are invited to do so.
We are so sorry to learn about Vern’s death. We always enjoyed his company at Rachel and Ben’s birthday parties. The whole family has our sympathy.
The picture of Vern and Ruby is such nice one.

So sorry to hear of Vern’s death. I also remember thinking he was the tallest man I EVER saw. Espically hanging out with the likes of us!
He was a very nice (and tall) man.
I am so sorry to hear of Vern’s passing.
I always remember thinking he was so TALL. He especially looked tall hanging out with the likes of us!
He was a very nice man.
It was a real pleasure getting to know Vern on our family visits to Iowa to visit family. I am so glad my son Matthew and Daughter Rachel were able to visit Ruby and Vern with their Mom Nancy Spicer Behrndt. Vern was certainly a class guy, and a pleasure to know.

He was the light of my mothers life for 30 years, and she was his. He was the sweetest man. He was the only grandpa most of the younger children knew, and what a grandpa he was. And what a stepdad he was. As all our brothers-in-law know, it’s not easy marrying into those “Spicer girls” family. We are many, we are loud, we are kidders, we love fun and jokes, and so did he.I love him and I will miss him forever.
We were so blessed to have Grandpa Vern in out lives. He was always so kind and sweet. I love that he made Grandma’s life so wonderful and took such good care of her. I will miss him very much
Vern was very dear to me. He and I went through a lot together and every time there was a crisis we were always glad to be a team. He was always ready with a joke and took every opportunity to flirt. He was quite a guy.
What a nice man. How could you not love him?
